How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings. But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand, since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke, I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you.; when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me, since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the Lord. Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm. - Proverbs 1:22-33
Do you love your “simple ways?” Are you “simple?” The root word used here is פָּתָה (pāṯâ) which refers to someone with and “open mind” – someone who is open to flattery, manipulation, or enticement – someone who is easily persuaded and easily deceived. Such a person hates Knowledge דַּעַת (daʿaṯ) / wisdom that comes from knowing and being known by God. The only hope for such a person is to repent. God says “if you will repent, I will pour out my thoughts to you – I will make known to you my teachings.” Do you see? Can you understand? Can you fathom the immeasurable value of what God is offering? He is offering to pour out His thoughts and make known the meaning of His teachings. Do you try to read the Bible and find that you can’t make sense of it? God is offering to reveal Himself to you from the very pages. He is offering to speak to your inner soul. His only prerequisite is that you repent and turn from your “simple ways” – your “open mind” that is swayed by every wind of doctrine, the ideals and values of the world, and the lies of the enemy. And for those who do not repent – for those who do not take what is freely offered… God will laugh at you when your calamity comes.
I recommend repentance. I recommend turning away from sin and “simple ways.” Turn to God – seek Him while He may be found. Very soon, it will be too late. He is waiting. He is ready to forgive - He loves to show mercy. He is ready to pour out His thoughts to you. The Creator and Sustainer of the universe wants to share His thoughts with you – How will you respond?
